Frequently Asked Questions

What should my family wear for our family portrait?

Whether casual, formal, indoor or outdoor, there are a few basic rules that if followed will produce great results.

Solid colors work best.  If patterns are necessary, make sure they are small prints.  No stripes… no polka-dots… no writing.  Pick a color scheme and stick to it.  When in doubt, lay all clothing out on a surface and stand back to look at it.  If one thing stands out over another, replace it.

The less skin showing, the better.  Any other skin showing will draw attention away from the face.  Your portrait will start to feel sloppy and disorganized.  Avoid tank tops and spaghetti straps like the plague.

All formal or all casual.  Make up your mind and make sure everyone in the portrait fits into that category.

When should I schedule my baby’s first portrait session?

Your baby’s first portrait should be done at about two weeks old.  This is a great age to get those sleeping baby shots that really show how tiny and beautiful your child is.

How many clothing changes should I bring for my senior portraits?

Keep in mind that your senior portraits are photographed by the hour.  The less time you spend changing, the more time we have for some great shots.  That said, two – three clothing changes are appropriate for an hour session, and four-five clothing changes for a two-hour session.

What should I wear for my senior portraits?

The same rules apply as with family portraits, but you have a little more wiggle room.  We want your senior portraits to be about who you are… so your clothing will reflect that.  Bring clothing that tells a little about your style, and bring a variety.  If your favorite color is black, that is fine. But try not to bring three black shirts to wear with the same pair of jeans.  Your images will start looking the same.

Can I bring my stuff for my portrait session?

Absolutely.  The more you bring, the more opportunity we have to make your images unique to you.  Good examples of things to bring would be: hats, sunglasses, sports equipment, vehicles, bikes, farm and ranch equipment, books, pets, etc.

I have a favorite spot that I want my photos taken.  Will you travel there?

Certainly.  There is no better way to tell about who you are in your portraits than to have it done in a location that is special to you.  The first 25 miles is free, and after that, there is a small travel fee.

Should my graduate bring his/her friends to the session?

This is completely up to you and your graduate.  It has been my experience, however, that while seniors bring  their friends for comfort and moral support, it is actually harder for them to relax in front of the camera with their friends present.  The result is forced smiles and stiff posture.  Buddy photos are a lot of fun, but have them done in the beginning of the session so friends can excuse themselves for the rest of it.

When is the best time for outdoor photographs?

The best time for outdoor sessions is always about one-two hours before sunset.  This is when the lighting is the softest.  However, if shade is available, portraits can also be done in the early morning or late afternoon.

What is the best clothing for a child’s portrait session?

Your child is small and the focus should be on them, not their clothing.  Please avoid any clothing with writing or characters on them.  Simple is always better.  Don’t have the perfect outfit?  Infants up to a year old can pull off many portrait sessions in nothing more than a diaper, bloomers, shorts or a frilly skirt.  If you are still struggling, just ask.  We may have some options available for you.

How do I view the images from my session?

All images are uploaded to the web for web preview.  This is an excellent way for you to be able to show anyone with computer access your images to get their opinions and suggestions for ordering.

How long before I receive my web link of my session?

It usually takes three to five business days to post.

Once I make my order, when will I receive my portraits?

It will take five business days if it is a normal portrait order.  Orders requiring digital work or design will take longer.

When do I pay my session fee?

Session fees are due at the time of the session. No exceptions.

Am I obligated to buy?

There is no obligation to buy unless you have a pre-paid package.

What if I don’t like my images?

We make every effort to make sure you are satisfied with your images.  However, we take no responsibility for poor clothing choices, a bad hair day, a cranky child, or a cranky husband.  If you are dissatisfied due to conditions the photographer should have controlled, we will be happy to schedule a reshoot.

Will my images be displayed at the studio?

All images are the property of Jody Thompson Portrait Design and may be displayed at our discretion.

However, if you are concerned and don’t want you images displayed, we will always honor your request.
